Algae: not the most charming of aquatic-based life, and not the most bankable of sneaker inspirations. Yet have managed to capture the photosynthetic seaweed's most appealing elements in an arresting new colourway for their celebrated model, christened 'Kombu Green'.
Devised by certified design legend (he of NB's and , , 'Wave Runner', and most recently ), the 1500 found an immediate fanbase upon its release in 1989. Its exceptional craftsmanship and inventive tech set new standards for performance footwear, introducing a then-fresh acceleration pad at the forefoot alongside New Balance's now-signature ENCAP heel system. After enjoying peak popularity in the mid-2010s, the 1500 has cruised through a relatively quiet 2020s era, though NB marked with a classic grey colourway in 2024. Now the premium palettes seem to be ramping up, with this latest kelp-based creation arriving alongside the 'Cork' and 'Vaporous Grey'.
The 'Kombu Green' is swathed in a pale green mesh underlay and lashed with verdant panels of rich, premium suede atop smooth grey leather, giving a real sense of serene, submarine movement. Branding lands in gold and white, while the outsole keeps it classic in brown gum.
